- Can refer to an individual, a commodity, a business or a nation
- Is an indicator that looks at both direct and indirect water use
Examples:
- Water footprint of a commodity = Total volume of freshwater used troughout steps in the production chain
- Water footprint of a consumer = Total volume of freshwater used to pruduce the goods and services consumed
